Gifts Kids Can Make: Foot-printed Towels
by Mary Jo Rulnick
Trying to budget money for extra gifts for birthdays or holidays can make anyone frantic. Let’s face it, there’s only so much money to go around. Here’s a fun idea the kids will love.
To make the creation session less stressful, consider making these items outside on the next nice day and the kids are looking for something to do.
Foot-printed Towels
To buy: Purchase a bath towel and acrylic paint if you don’t have any on hand. Light-colored towels work best and try to use a bright, attractive color for the paint. Pick these up on sale. Scan the clearance tables for discounted merchandise.
To make: Lay the towel on a flat surface, removing any wrinkles. Place a small amount of acrylic paint in a disposable container--like a pie tin or ready-made lasagna pan. The container must be big enough for the child to put his feet into it. Swirl the paint back and forth in the container until the bottom is covered. Lay the towel out flat. With bare feet, have the child step into the container, and then step onto the towel starting at one end and continue the process walking to the other end. Allow to dry for 24 hours. With a paint pen or permanent marker, you can write the child’s name and year on an underside corner of the towel or inside one of the footprints
To clean feet: Have a pan of soapy water ready for your child to step into after he made his footprints. Scrub until the paint is gone. Do not let paint try.
Tip: If you have two kids, have one do the left foot while the other does the right foot. If you have more than two, do stripes of the different sized feet or randomize the pattern for an all-over collage!
